In 2005, my boyfriend/now husband (DS) and I decided we wanted to visit all the accredited zoos in the United States. We were inspired to do this while visiting the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin. Near the exit of their Discovery Center there is this map of the US, with red dots indicating the locations of the zoos. Surrounding the map are patches from the zoos.
I have long been a collector of patches from places I visit, especially zoos. DS and I stared at this map for a while, and decided that there weren't really that many. "I bet we could see them all," I said. To which DS responded, "Okay, let's do it."
